David Dominque - When the Sun is Eaten (Chi’bal K’iin)

Three eclipses, three cities—regional ghosts as deep drones, local samples and static.

When the Sun is Eaten (Chi’bal K’iin) is a film by acclaimed artist Kevin Jerome Everson, featuring the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse, captured over the skies of Cleveland, Ohio, Carbondale, Illinois and Mazatlán, Mexico. The film premiered in the Forum Expanded section at the Berlinale in February 2025.

David Dominique's textural soundtrack samples artists local to the eclipse sites and processes voices into immersive, shifting drones. The layers uncannily retain sonic fingerprints of place, anchoring each eclipse shot in a ghostly musical geography.
